So what are the 5 Do It’s?

Just DO IT: We are all familiar with the Nike tagline: Just do it. The beginning of anything great requires us to just do it. Just get started. Just begin. Do the project, start the business, get the loan, ask the girl out, apply for that position… JUST DO IT!

 “You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”-Zig Ziglar

My mother used to tell me: “Sebastien, ACTION is a magic word.”

Now, you might ask: Do what? Well, that depends on each individual. But here are clues:

  •        Do the thing that has been nagging you for a long time
  •        What makes you angry in your life might be a good clue as to what you need to take action on
  •        The thing we most FEAR to do is often the thing we most NEED to do

Which bring us to our next point:

DO IT afraid: The president of the John Maxwell Team, of which we are a part of, coining the phrase ‘DO it afraid.’ When teaching us to build our coaching business, he has often said these very words.

Because, guess what… like Yoda said to Luke Skywalker: “You will be afraid.”

When building that business or venturing out in the pursuit of your dreams, you will have to do things you are very afraid of – things that stretch you out of your comfort zone. Things that will make you lose sleep. You might also have to do things that will cost you money or friendships. You will be afraid. Do it afraid.

Here are a few good quotes on facing your fears:

“Do the thing we fear, and death of fear is certain.” —Ralph Waldo Emerson

“Action cures fear, inaction creates terror.” —Douglas Horton

“Never let the fear of striking out get in your way.” —Babe Ruth

Here’s a video we did on this topic;

DO IT anyway: For ‘do it anyway’, I could use my own words, but I think Mother Teresa’s poem expresses best where I want to go with this:

Mother Teresa’s Anyway Poem:

“People are often unreasonable, illogical and self centered;

Forgive them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;

Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies;

Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you;

Be honest and frank anyway.

What you spend years building, someone could destroy overnight;

Build anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, they may be jealous;

Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow;

Do good anyway.

Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough;

Give the world the best you’ve got anyway.

You see, in the final analysis, it is between you and your God;

It was never between you and them anyway.”

Yes friends, you will encounter all kinds of trouble on your own hero’s quest. Setbacks, trials, tests, failures, scoffing and mocking of friends and family, financial losses… DO IT ANYWAY!

This is the persistence part. Your mettle will be tested time and again, in more ways than you can imagine. The strength of your desire to succeed will get you through. This is the ‘do it’ where we separate the men from the boys. It’s the Marathon of achievement, and only those with the strongest hearts will finish the race.

DO IT consistently: Tony Robbins said this: “It’s not what we do once in a while that shapes our lives. It’s what we do consistently.”

For those of you who have read Darren Hardy’s excellent book The Compound Effect; you know just how important consistent action is in order to achieve your goals.

Consistency is not flashy, not impressive, and doesn’t get you noticed. Consistency is what you do when nobody is looking. It’s the nitty gritty behind-the-scenes stuff that isn’t popular – or likeable even. But without consistency, you can forget about long lived success. It’s just that important.

I like John Maxwell’s teaching on the Rule of five. I spoke about it in a video on YouTube entitled: Why every entrepreneur must have a rule of 5. The rule of five is simply 5 things that you will do consistently EVERY DAY until you reach your goals.

Which brings me to my last ‘Do It’…

DO IT until: The late Jim Rohn was well known for saying this in his speeches. He would answer the question: How long should you give a baby to try to learn how to walk? Until…

  • Promise yourself you’ll read the books UNTIL your skills change
  • You’ll go to seminars UNTIL you get a handle on it
  • You’ll listen to it UNTIL it makes sense
  • You’ll go for it UNTIL you understand
  • You’ll practice it UNTIL you develop the skill
  • Never give up UNTIL… however long that is

How long shall I put in all this effort and try to reach my goals or change my life? “DO IT UNTIL”, was his answer. It should be your answer as well.

Always remember that everything worthwhile in your lives and mine is uphill and it takes time. Do it until…

So, let’s recap the 5 DO ITS you need to make IT happen:

  • Just DO IT
  • DO IT afraid
  • DO IT anyway
  • DO IT consistently
  • DO IT until

And may God bless you as you do it!
